Frequently Asked
Questions

An architectural firm is responsible for the structural design of buildings, which will then be used by a construction company to create the building. They typically provide the design, technical drawings and plans. Many firms also work on projects that are in progress, liaising with builders and making any necessary corrections to drawings along the way.

Architects and engineers have different roles. Architects design the spatial structure of a building, drawing the interior and exterior according to customer needs. Architectural engineers then use these designs to construct the foundation of the building, using technological principles to create the systems required, such as electrical and plumbing systems. They are also responsible for the safety of a building.

When choosing an architecture firm, you should always look for quality. A good architectural company has a varied portfolio, highly trained architects and strong relationships with quality contractors. You should also check that they are registered with ARB.

It really depends on what you want to do. If you’re simply adjusting the interior of your home, and you have a builder you trust, an architect is less necessary. However, if you are extending or carrying out extensive remodelling, you will need an architect to create plans and ensure that the building is structured the way it needs to be.

This depends on the architectural firm you use and their policy. Often a fee is charged to ensure clients are serious about their project. For details on the fees charged by The Architects of London, get in touch with us today.

Once the initial consultation is complete, you’ll receive several plan options that fit your needs, accompanied by estimated build costs. Once you’ve settled on a plan, we’ll obtain planning permission on your behalf and manage the risks, contracts and administrative tasks throughout the project.

This depends on the size of your project. The consultation will include discussions about your requirements and a look at your home to assess what is possible. Smaller projects typically take one or two hours, while larger ones could take longer.

Our architects can help with everything from single and double storey extensions and loft conversions to bungalow conversions and new build homes. We operate across London and have offices in Chiswick, Hampstead and Kensington.

Unfortunately it is not possible to guarantee planning permission, as it is given at the discretion of the local planning authority. However, our architects can ensure your application has the best chance of success by considering local authority guidelines and statutory requirements.

Your architect should be involved in your project from the very start. An architect will be able to evaluate your property, put forward ideas that you may not have considered, and help to give you the best possible chance of securing planning permission for your build.

At The Architects of London, we’re with you throughout your project. Our ‘Design and Build’ service includes an initial consultation, the provision of plans and application for planning permission as well as full management of your project’s risks, contracts and administration tasks. You will have a dedicated Project Manager to oversee everything on your behalf, right up to completion of your project.
