The Architects Of London Designed
Open Plan Kitchen/Diner

Will change your life forever. That seems dramatic but is totally true. We hear it time and time again from one happy client to another. An open plan Kitchen/Diner coupled with large format opening glass doors to the garden is the single most effective thing that changes how you live at home and interact with family and friends.

How we use this space has changed forever. Gone are the days of cooking in silo style separate Kitchens. Cooking is now social, its an event for all to partake. The Kitchen is now a connected space, its the hub of your home where everyone comes and goes.

The Architects Of London is the leading open plan Kitchen/Diner extension designer in South London. Nearly everyone of our design appointments have included an open plan Kitchen/Diner of some sort. This also normally involves opening out the rear wall to the Garden area with slimline bifold or sliding glass doors. Its the area we have most experience and in reality is our speciality.

“We knew roughly what we wanted but there were a few question marks and decisions that we felt were not sitting right. Ali came and gave a clearer picture and what he felt was best design and flow for our project. Clear, easy, to-the-point and allows us to progress knowing money invested is well-spent and not a design error - would 100% use again”

“A very thorough service indeed. Just what I would expect for the money paid. I cannot comment on the architectural ability as we had a very specific plan already set. Very easy to deal with, punctual and courteous.”

Kitchen Design FAQs

The cost of a kitchen design depends on a number of factors, including the size of your kitchen, the design elements you want to incorporate and the materials you’d like to use. You’ll need to decide whether you’re looking to include an island, the amount of tiling you want on the walls and floor, and the level of fixtures and fittings you require.

A kitchen designer will discuss and design your new kitchen according to your needs and preferences. Whether you want to remodel or update an existing kitchen, or create a new one in an area you’re extending, they will create a space that incorporates everything you want. A kitchen designer will consider the layout and intended usage of your kitchen, the type and placement of appliances, the types of doors and worktops required and any aesthetic touches such as colours and patterns.

Whether you include an architect in your kitchen design depends on the nature of the work. If it’s a simple refit with no significant layout changes, you may not need one. However, if you are planning a big renovation of your space or completely changing the layout of the kitchen, it’s a good idea to involve an architect. They will be able to look at how your kitchen will fit in the overall space, help you maximise storage space and functionality, and advise on colour and style trends.

Yes. Many people choose to do this with a side, rear or wraparound extension. The type you choose depends on the layout of your property. When extending an existing kitchen it’s advisable to involve an architect, as they will be able to ensure your space is used to best effect.

Whether planning permission is required depends on the nature of the kitchen extension. If you are making significant changes, such as extending the rear wall of the house by over three metres to accommodate the kitchen, or making changes to the roof or windows, you’re likely to need planning permission. If you are having a side extension, it may be that you don’t need planning permission. Getting an architect to advise on the need for planning based on your desired work will ensure you don’t run into problems with your local authority.

The kitchen is the heart of a home, and extending it will add value to your property. Depending on the size and scale of the renovation, you could see an increase of 5-8% to the value of your home for a single storey extension. A double storey extension may add up to 12%.

If you’re planning to extend your kitchen, it’s highly advisable to get an architect involved at the earliest possible stage. An architect will be able to assess the space and ensure you make the most of it while also designing something you love. They will ensure that any necessary planning permission is granted and that the relevant Building Regulations are adhered to. It’s particularly important to engage an architect if you are looking to achieve something out of the ordinary or have a house on an unusual site.

There is no ideal size for a kitchen extension - it really depends on the amount of space you have to work with and what you want to achieve. At The Architects of London, we will be able to advise you on how to make the most of your extension and ensure your new kitchen has everything you need.

The first thing you need to do when planning a kitchen extension is determine your needs and budget. Would you like the room to have extended family round for dinner? Do you need more storage? Would you like a separate utility room? Once you have an idea of your needs and budget you can approach an architect to assess your site and create drawings. At The Architects of London, we can design your kitchen to meet your requirements and preferred aesthetics, as well as oversee the build phase of your project. Contact us to find out more.

The build of your extension should fit around your needs. If you’re planning to move out during the build, you may choose to have it in spring or autumn when contractors are more likely to be available and the weather is a little more favourable. If you want to live in while the build takes place, you may prefer to choose the summer when the days are longer and the job is less likely to be affected by adverse weather. Ultimately it’s up to you - just ensure you book your contractors well in advance.
